To achieve strong ROI on your staffing software...do not overlook your infrastructure...

For a staffing company to achieve a significant ROI on its software investment, a number of things must be accomplished. There has to be enough strategic relevance to the project to keep senior management engaged, so they lead and empower the organization. Operational managers have to believe that the software will help them do their jobs better. They are primarily interested in how the technology is going to affect them on a day-to-day basis. Will help them accomplish operational goals that will make them shine in front of senior management? End users need to be empowered by being involved with the business analysis process so they understand the impact of using the software. They also need to be given time and resources to learn the software properly and have the confidence to use it effectively in their jobs.

You can do all these things correctly and still throw a major obstacle in the way of success, if you do not provide a strong and stable platform for the software. The Internet has been recognized as a relevant and useful tool for millions of people around the world. And yet as useful and accepted a tool as the Internet is, people quickly lose enthusiasm when usage is hampered by either unreliable communications or a poor performing web host service. The same is true with staffing software. You can have the most elegantly designed staffing package with the potential to heighten productivity and enable your staffing firm to out- perform your competition. Yet, if it is sitting on top of an unreliable hardware platform that is either slow or has intermittent problems, much of the luster of a new system deployment will be lost on your staff. It is much more difficult to put the shine back on a project once it hits difficulties, than it is to have an initial positive experience and keep building on the success.

A good IT platform needs good IT support. Years ago, Jaguar was esteemed as a beautiful luxury car, but it was a known fact that if you owned one, you had better have a good mechanic close by. Today, the same is true of your desktop computers and network. Staffing software is a mission critical application. When a computer goes down, an employee is greatly encumbered from doing his or her job. First, you need to make sure you have fast and reliable equipment. Secondly, you need to have someone who can get it up and running quickly. This might be an in-house IT person or it might be a service person or organization that you develop a good relationship with. Do not underestimate the importance of these resources to your company and the success of your software deployment. Overlooking these areas can make the difference between your staff being very enthusiastic about your new system or perceiving it as another obstacle keeping them from doing their job.
